Innovative Design and Technology in Education (IDeaTE) is a Master of Education program designed to empower you to shape the future of learning through a blend of human-centered innovation, applied learning theory and cutting-edge technologies.

The four-semester, 30-credit-hour program leverages world-class faculty expertise in learning analytics and emerging AI technologies. It allows you to engage with the latest trends in educational technology and provides a space to gain insight into how technology can effectively enhance learning outcomes. You will also complete a one semester internship and capstone leveraging the knowledge and practices gained across both course and field experiences.

Program Highlights

Unique one-semester internship opportunities with community partners like The Wond’ry, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, The National Museum of African American Music and the Frist Art Museum.

Learn from core faculty driving innovative research who make use of digital games, AI and VR to engage learners in new and creative ways.

The capstone project begins during your first semester as you work through a design process to develop and implement prototypes.

Post-capstone presentation examples include Podcasts and Education; Retuning and Refining Museum Educational Programming; Math, Motivation, & Technology: Envisioning an Engaging High School Math Classroom; Empathy as Learning: Activating Empathy in the Workplace; and others.

As a STEM-designated program, it includes instruction in foundations of educational technology; computer applications; utilizing technology for assessment; multimedia instruction; web-based instruction; distance education; and designing and producing educational software and materials. 

Students are granted access to the LIVE Learning Innovation Incubator.

Scott Crossley is a professor of special education and the Certificate in Learning Analytics director. His research focuses on using data science and artificial intelligence to explore cognition, with an emphasis on natural language processing.

Professor Alyssa Wise

Alyssa Wise, professor of technology and education and director of the Certificate in Emerging Learning Technologies and AI, combines the tools of data science, the theory of learning sciences and the practices of human-centered design in her research. She builds and studies the use of learning analytics systems that promote equitable and effective education.

Earn a Learning Analytics Certificate or Emerging Learning Technologies and AI Certificate Alongside the IDeaTE Program

All students enrolled in the IDeaTE program take courses that count toward a certificate. To meet elective requirements, students may choose to complete a certificate, or they may take 6 credit hours of elective courses in an area of interest. In addition to the benefits of a master’s degree, certificates provide further opportunities for career advancement and grounded experience.
